Distinct birds. Individual needs. Start with the right species.
01 / BreedingA northern Australian grass-seed specialist whose wild food supply changes with rainfall. The captive annual plan should distinguish breeding, moult and rest instead of keeping every bird under permanent breeding stimulation.
Domesticated social finches widely used in aviculture as foster parents. An individual's successful history with one species does not establish suitability for every waxbill or parrotfinch.
Confirmation neededAn active parrotfinch. For the provisional Red-throated identity, provide bathing opportunities and scope for flight rather than a cage filled with obstacles.
An active parrotfinch whose apparent small size should not obscure its need for space or its possible territorial behaviour.
African forest-edge finches associated with cover. Offer a calm retreat and secure low foraging opportunities without placing food in droppings or damp litter.
A grassland and wetland-edge finch. Provide finely scaled feeding and landing opportunities, shelter and space to escape disturbance.
A highly aerial finch. Elevated feeding and drinking stations are particularly relevant: the NFSS account notes that this species seldom comes to ground.
A specialist African estrildid. A verified species identity should precede the choice of images, pair combinations and breeding calendar.
Confirmation neededSmall African blue waxbills. Their fine bills and behaviour should be reflected in species-specific food and nest guides rather than a generic finch photograph.
A southern African bird of dry scrub and thorny woodland. Pairs forage for seeds and small insects. Its natural rainfall-linked breeding pattern does not prescribe breeding months for an indoor room in Jerusalem; plan breeding, moult and rest from the birds' condition and your records.
A finch of African thickets, forest edges and dense vegetation near water. It feeds mainly close to the ground. A useful captive layout therefore combines a protected low foraging area with cover and clear routes to food, water and elevated resting places.
An active western African finch of grassy areas with shrubs, thickets and scattered trees. Seeds are gathered both near the ground and in vegetation. Pairs and small flocks occur naturally, but wild sociability does not guarantee safety in a shared breeding cage. Build the indoor routine around movement, retreat and predictable undisturbed rest.
Native to south-eastern Australia and Tasmania, it uses dense coastal heath and scrub near water. A pair or small family often moves quietly through low cover rather than staying exposed.
A north-eastern Australian grassland and open-woodland finch, often social at water. Natural seed availability and retained grass cover are central to its ecology, not constant indoor breeding stimulation.
A social Asian grass-seed finch associated with grasslands, marshes and rice-growing areas. It can forage in large flocks, including during breeding, but flock behaviour outdoors does not establish a safe cage stocking density.
Occurs in northern and eastern Australia and New Guinea, using long grass, swamps and other dense grassy cover. It often takes seeds while clinging to stems and can gather in conspicuous groups.
A northern Australian grassfinch. Plan around grass-seed foraging, paired social contact and room for rapid flight. A reference addition to the library is not evidence that the owner already holds this species.
An eastern Australian finch using grassy feeding areas next to thick understorey, often near creeks. Flocks escape rapidly into cover when disturbed, so exposed housing can deny an important part of its behaviour.
A northern Australian grassfinch with strong pair bonds. A pair can be closely attached while still requiring independent access to food, bathing and flight; pair bonding is not a reason for continuous reproductive pressure.
An arid Australian finch associated with spinifex country. Low foraging and nest-building opportunities matter, but a dry natural range does not mean drinking water can be withheld or seed dishes left contaminated.
Native to south-eastern Australian grassy woodland and open country with scattered trees. It commonly feeds on the ground, so feeding layout must provide clean low access as well as elevated retreat and exercise routes.
An island munia of eastern Indonesia. A museum specimen account records it in the Lesser Sundas, and Cornell recognises it as a separate species. Distribution evidence is useful for identity but is not a captive management manual.
A northern Australian finch closely associated with tall grasses and watercourses. The university account describes its regular tail flicking. Preserve grass-like cover and secure routes between low feeding areas and elevated refuge.
Native to the eastern Kimberley and north-west Northern Territory of Australia, associated with grassy, wetland and agricultural habitats. Natural movement and mixed flocks reflect changing resources, not unlimited tolerance within a cage.
An eastern Australian grassfinch. Its relatively gentle captive reputation makes avoidance of bullying particularly important: quiet perching can mean security, but can also conceal restricted food access or displacement from cover.
A northern Australian grass-seed specialist with an especially gentle captive reputation. NFSS recommends experienced keepers and notes sensitivity to temperature; that warning does not establish a single universally safe room-temperature number.
A highly social Australian finch of dry open country, responsive to changing food conditions. Early biological maturity is not permission for uninterrupted breeding; plan rest and recovery as well as nesting.
A northern Australian finch of tall grasses and reeds near surface water. It forages among seed-bearing vegetation; retain a balance of cover and open movement rather than filling every cage surface with perches.
A bird of Brazilian and Bolivian cerrado and rocky grassland. It is not an Australian grassfinch, and its habitat should not be inferred from the poster heading.
Occurs in open and semi-open South American habitats; populations elsewhere may be introduced. An Australian poster does not establish Australian origin.
Native to southern Asia, with introduced populations elsewhere. Flocks forage on grasses and near the ground, often around dense cover and water.
Native to northern and eastern Australia, especially grassy woodland and shrub cover. The common name Owl Finch refers to its facial pattern, not its family.
A European and western Asian/north African bird of woodland edges, farmland and gardens; some populations are introduced elsewhere. Its seasonal cycle differs from tropical estrildids.
Associated with European and adjacent regions’ open woodland, gardens and seed-rich vegetation. A seasonal temperate bird should not automatically follow a tropical breeding-light programme.
Native across parts of southern and southeastern Asia, favouring tall grasses, marshy edges and cultivated areas. Introduced populations do not change its native origin.
Native to Indonesian islands including Java and Bali; introduced flocks occur elsewhere. A social grain feeder of open cultivated areas, not a wild Australian finch.
A temperate bird of woodland, gardens and farmland across much of Europe and neighbouring regions. Wild seasonal changes are not equivalent to a permanent tropical breeding cycle.
A northern bird of tundra scrub and boreal/open woodland, often feeding in mobile flocks. Cold-region adaptation does not make abrupt temperature changes harmless or establish an indoor climate setting.
Ranges across parts of Southeast Asia, New Guinea and Pacific islands, including an Australian population. Habitat and form vary across this broad distribution.
Native to New Caledonia. This guide covers normal-coloured birds. The separate sea-green entry is an owner-reported colour variant whose species and mutation still require confirmation; it is not another confirmed species.
Occurs in parts of Southeast Asia, including Indonesian islands, Malaysia and the Philippines. Primary field notes emphasise secretive behaviour and limited knowledge; bamboo and montane habitats are important in some regions.
A species endemic to Mindanao in the Philippines, associated with upland forest and its edges. It is not an Australian native merely because it appears on the chart.
Native to New Guinea’s moist montane forest. It is not simply a large captive Blue-faced mutation; the taxonomic question requires provenance and expert review.
Endemic to Fiji. BirdLife describes use of several habitats including forest, grassland, cultivated ground and gardens; local occurrence does not establish a universal captive routine.
This profile focuses on the Vanuatu regia birds, while the wider merged Royal species also includes Samoan forms. Cornell documented the merger in 2022; the old species label alone does not establish provenance. Taxonomic treatments differ; retain the Vanuatu form and historical scientific name in records.
