Identification
Use the scientific name to distinguish Forbes from the similar-sounding Blue-faced Parrotfinch, Erythrura trichroa. Maintain individual photographs and a juvenile label so adult coloration is not expected in developing birds.
Male & female
A photograph is not a substitute for a documented sexing method when selecting a breeding pair. Record song or display observations and DNA results when available.
Nature & behaviour
An active parrotfinch whose apparent small size should not obscure its need for space or its possible territorial behaviour.
Cages & aviaries
Plan dedicated pair housing during breeding, with a clear horizontal route and sight breaks that do not block flight. In a multi-species room, separate cages still need adequate distance and calm service routines.
Diet & feeding
The NFSS account includes seed, egg food, sprouted seed and greens, with some birds accepting animal food during rearing. Follow the pair's demonstrated intake. Hygienically prepared sprouted food is optional; it must not override food-safety control.
Breeding
Gary McCrae's firsthand NFSS account reports clutches of3–6eggs, incubation around13days and fledging at18–21days. He describes roughly three further weeks before full weaning. Keep these as source-labelled observations and verify sustained independent intake before separation.
Compatibility
NFSS specifically reports that Forbes can be aggressive toward their own species and toward Gouldians. Use separate breeding accommodation and intervene if there is chasing, exclusion or injury.
Breeding timeline
Follow the bird, not just the calendar. Published ranges are observation windows; actual parental care and feeding decide the next step.
