Calcium sources and insoluble grit have different jobs

   Identify the material

   Read the composition. A fine particle size alone does not establish whether a grit mixture is soluble or insoluble.

   Separate the roles

   Finches hull their seeds and do not need insoluble grit to grind seed. Soluble calcium has a nutritional role that must be considered separately.

   Review the ration

   Check existing calcium and vitamin D3 from food and other products. Do not turn a free-choice mineral product into an invented measured supplement dose.

What it provides

Home-prepared eggshell is a calcium ingredient, not a complete mineral supplement or insoluble grit.

When to consider it

Prefer a traceable bird-grade calcium product when preparation and calcium inclusion cannot be validated. Unmeasured shell powder is not a dosing method.

Intended birds / scope

Granivorous ornamental birds; species and life stage determine how it fits the whole ration.

How it is given

In a clean feeding dish; oral feeding by the birds.

Frequency / duration

No routine frequency established for the unidentified pack; first obtain a documented inclusion plan.

Preparation

No validated home heat-treatment protocol is supplied here. Record a proven food-hygiene process, final particle size and measured inclusion before use.

Combining products

Do not combine several unmeasured additions. Record grams per kg of final food and account for the base feed’s existing nutrients.

Storage & handling

Keep sealed, cool and dry, away from pests. Use a dry scoop, retain batch/expiry, and reject damp, mouldy or rancid material.

Breeder tips

Mineral availability does not establish adequate calcium or vitamin D. Match the exact product and avoid duplicating several calcium sources blindly.
