A separate room

New birds and birds returning from outside contact need a quarantine plan before arrival. Pet-bird welfare guidance describes a separate room, hand hygiene and servicing newcomers after established birds. Another cage in the same bird room is not equivalent separation.

  1. 01

    Empty and clean

Remove birds, feed and water. Remove organic material, wash and rinse equipment before disinfection.

  2. 02

    Follow the label

Use the correct environmental dilution and contact time for the local label and task. Keep the surface wet for the required contact period.

  3. 03

    Rinse, dry, ventilate

Rinse food-contact equipment as directed. Dry and ventilate fully before restoring equipment and birds.

Time plus health criteria

Published guidance ranges from at least 30 days with health/testing criteria to roughly six weeks. Choose the release plan with an avian veterinarian; a date alone does not clear an unwell bird. Keep new arrivals from being added to an existing quarantine group without reassessing the timeline.

Clean with purpose

Remove organic dirt before using a suitable disinfectant and follow its dilution, contact-time, rinse and drying instructions. Keep feed bins dry and rodent-proof. Assign separate dishes and tools and avoid spreading dirty wash water or dust through the room. Routine antibiotics are not a substitute for quarantine and diagnostic assessment.
