Complete the record
Identify both birds, their species, age evidence, sexing method, relationship and source. Keep colour mutation and known genetic splits separate from appearance. Document previous breeding and health outcomes rather than relying on 'proven pair' as a complete history.
Prepare resources
Establish accepted rearing food, a dependable supply, a calm nest location and suitable housing for fledglings. Review body condition and the complete calcium/vitamin plan with an avian veterinarian when needed. A pair in moult, poor condition or unresolved illness should not be pushed by adding more stimulants.
Observe compatibility
Record courtship, calm proximity and mutual access to resources. Repeated chasing, forced mating attempts, a bird trapped in a corner or exclusion from food calls for intervention. A male building a nest does not prove a compatible, fertile pair. Review why a previous attempt failed before replacing the nest and repeating it.
